Woodlark

Woodlark are the first of the summer visitors to Cannock Chase and start to search for nesting sites from early March.  They are resident all year round further south but our Midland winters are a little too cold for them.

They are a vocal bird and the sound of them singing on the heathland is a sign that summer is on the way.
They will nest in a heather bush or a tussock of coarse grass and feed on insects and seeds.
Woodlarks are listed under Schedule 1 of The Wildlife and Countryside Act, which means it is illegal to disturb them.
The best way to help woodlark thrive on the Chase is to keep to the main wide paths and keep your dog on a lead from the 1st March to the 31st August.
