Livestock on Cannock Chase
Cattle – the Sustainable Conservation Crew.
Grazing with cattle is a sustainable way of preventing scrub and small trees and bracken from dominating the heathland and encourages flowering plans and insects.
Cattle can be found in some areas of Cannock Chase, helping to restore heathland habitats in an environmentally friendly way. Conservation grazing is an important tool to look after Cannock Chase’s internationally important area of heathland habitat.
You will see Belted Galloway, Highland and Hereford cattle. These smaller, hardy breeds will browse small trees and woody plants as well as break up the surface of the soil with their hooves damaging the invasive bracken and limit the growth of bramble.
Please remember that you must keep your dog on a lead if you enter a grazing area. It is a legal requirement that dogs are kept on a lead around livestock.
Please keep a safe distance and don’t approach or feed.
